A Guide to Broadband Installation

In this first half of our two-part guide, we’ll look at whether you need to pay for installation, how much it costs, how long it takes, how much we charge and what follows after you’ve ordered with us. So, without further ado, let’s crack on!

Do I need to pay for broadband installation?

There are packages available for customers without an active landline that include free installation with our Unlimited Broadband and Super Fast Broadband. These broadband packages are for ASDL from other broadband providers. These options are unsuitable if you want broadband capable of connecting multiple devices to the internet or live in an area where cable broadband isn’t available.

Ultra-fast fibre-optic broadband deals without installation charges are also available on the market. For example, our 24 month contract deals include free broadband installation. If you need a new landline installing, chances are you’re unlikely to find a deal that includes installation for both the broadband and landline without incurring any charges.

It’s completely your choice if you want to dig deep on the internet and find such a deal. Some internet service providers (ISPs) will offer you free installation for broadband and possibly even a new landline, but you’ll most likely pick up the costs in your monthly payments. Plus, your chosen provider will probably try to trap you into an expensive long term contract.

Will I need to pay for broadband installation if I have an active landline?

Even if you have an active landline, you will still need to pay for broadband installation with some of our packages

If you don’t currently have a landline, we can activate a new one as part of the installation of your broadband package. We can also offer broadband with no phone line.

Cheapest and quickest installation?

Now you’re in a position to shop around – but, before you do let’s go over a couple more factors related to broadband installation. You need to know what’s available to you to be able to get the best broadband. Bear in mind that BT’s FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) network has 91% UK coverage. Compare this to their full-fibre option FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) with a UK coverage of just 8%. The majority of BT’s customers, therefore, depend on Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC).

Even if you don’t use a house phone, your FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) fibre-optic broadband will use the same copper cables that the phone lines would use. So, without an active landline, prices will increase. BT charges £140.00 for customers who need a landline activated as part of their broadband installation.

You might live in an area where cable broadband is available to you. This means you will have access to Virgin Media’s own network. Virgin Media offered deals with free installation in August 2021. But, on the other hand, their 18 month contracts have monthly costs that are almost triple our own. Like we said, they’ll make you pay for free installation somewhere down the line.

Typically, Virgin’s installation costs are £40.00 and they charge £20.00 for an activation fee. Likewise, you can expect a cost of £60.00 for installation with Sky Broadband. Installation charges are subject to the package you choose with them.

With PlusNet, you’ll need to pay £49.99 if you need a new landline and you may be charged additional set-up costs subject to the package you choose. In addition to the £60.00 it costs to set up a new landline with TalkTalk, you might get away with paying a setup fee. Again, this depends on…you’ve guessed it…the package you choose.

It usually takes the aforementioned providers approximately two weeks to get you connected to broadband. Switches between different providers vary. We usually take between ten and fourteen days to get you fully switched over to us. We believe in stress-free switching! That’s why we do as much as we can on your behalf and keep you in the know every step of the way.

How much does Broadband Freedom charge for installation?

Our installation costs vary between the different broadband services we offer and how long you sign up with us. The good news is our installation fees still beat many of the biggest broadband providers in the market. What’s more, our monthly broadband prices stay competitive, and we reward loyalty with lower installation costs. The longer you sign up with us, the cheaper the installation fees become. Take our 18 month Unlimited Broadband for example – it’s yours for £22.00 a month and a single installation charge of just £25.00.

Check out all our packages here. There are no extra costs hidden behind terms, conditions nor are you subjected to vague package deals. Simply put, what you see on our packages page is what you get.

So, what’s next if I choose Broadband Freedom?

We advise you to check your local speed and whether you have a landline or not. After you’ve done this and ordered the package best suited to you, we’re ready to go!

If your property already has an active landline, we will send you a router that you simply plug into the wall socket. Our customers who need a landline activated and broadband installed should expect to hear from us.

We’ll call you to arrange a suitable time for one of our engineers to visit. Aside from Virgin Media who use their own network, most other ISPs, including ourselves, use the BT Openreach network. By the same token, you may also receive a call from BT Openreach asking for a time for one of their engineers to visit.

Our engineer will arrive at the designated time agreed between you and our exclusive provider, Hometelecom. The engineer will bring the router and all the necessary equipment to get you up and running! Most of the works will be carried out on the street at the nearest cabinet.

Our engineers will need access to your home and will ask where you want the connection to enter. Don’t worry – they can advise you where they think is best if you’re unsure. Also, be sure to get permission from your landlord if you’re living in rented property. Works will take between 1 – 2 hours. In fact, our engineers will even give you an estimate on the day!
